Penetration Test: Paiute Bow vs. Deer
primitivepathways.com In this video Billy Berger tests the penetration capabilities of a replica Northern Paiute bow and arrow on a freshly harvested deer. All internal organs were left in place to ensure this test replicates real hunting scenarios that the Northern Paiute would have encountered. The bow was 42-lb sinew backed juniper with lightweight reed arrows tipped with small obsidian points. You'll get to see, firsthand, just what the Northern Paiute bow and arrow is capable of.

Flintknapping Quartz, Making Quartz Arrowheads

Quartz was used heavily in prehistory for spearpoints, arrowheads and knives, but today most knappers won't even touch it due to much better options being available, like glass, obsidian, and flint. Hunting with Stone Points is Valuable Archaeology

    I remember seeing a timber rattler fed a mouse slightly smaller than that. Death was within a couple of seconds-I was shocked. The snake began eating the mouse in 10 to 20 seconds after the bite. I figured the dosage of venom must vary a lot between individual snakes.

    I’d imagine the arrows going much deeper/through if it were alive! I can’t help but think with a heart pumping and blood/fluid through all the living tissue would help it to pass through. How long had the buck been dead before you tested?

    • @primitivepathways
      @primitivepathways 13 годин тому

      It had been dead for at least 8 hours before I got it. So it was stiff from rigor mortis. I'd bet that if the deer was alive I might have gotten even better penetration than I did in this test.

    Cherokees also made river cane arrows, but only used 2 feather fletchings instead of 3. I bought a hickory Cherokee bow at the Cherokee Reservation in Western, NC at the eastern base of the Great Smokey Mountains. My Grandfather was 1/4 Cherokee and born in Hickory, NC. His Mother took him on a train to Oklahoma to meet his Western relatives. He contracted malaria there. His son got malaria while fighting in the Pacific during WW2.

    • @primitivepathways
      @primitivepathways 20 годин тому

      I certainly could make heavier arrows, but I'm replicating the arrows based on the museum examples I've seen. They also made heavier arrows out of hardwood shoots like wild rose, but I know heavier arrows would of course result in deeper penetration. I wanted to see how well the lighter reed arrows would penetrate.

I have the exact same setup. 320 grain read arrows with a sinew backed juniper bow but my bow is only 30lbs but it flings those arrows 160fps! I just wanna know the speed of yours so i can make a good penetration estimation for my bow and arrows.. here in ND we have Phragmites australis americanus. They are kinda red at this time of year but as they dry out they turn that tan color.

    Coming back to this video and seeing it be 13 years old is crazy! I use to rewatch this series over and over again when I was a kid trying to make a functional bow. I then gravitated to modern archery and now I’m bored with it. So here I am again…10 years later. Glad to see you are still posting videos and man I’ve missed primitive archery. Time to make a bow now that I’m more able bodied and able to comprehend instead of being a mush brained child 😂

    Gar fish scales make good blowgun dart points, as do honey locust or even big black locust thorns. Several years ago I got several gar fish scales from a friend. They were nt as big as the one in the picture. I eventually lost the darts they were on. But hey would kill a cottontail very quickly. I imagine smaller shark teeth would do the same.
